Spring Fling Event and 3-day Art and Plant Sale at Neighborhood Center of the Arts.
Neighborhood Center of the Arts continues an annual tradition on Friday, April 25 with the "Spring Fling" event, featuring an open house, outdoor performances, and a Spring Art and Plant Sale starting at 11:00 am. The festivities continue from 5 pm to 8 pm on Friday evening with a gallery reception for the new "House and Garden" Exhibition showcasing the diverse talents of artists with developmental disabilities in our community. NCA is grateful for the continuing support of The Union, Grass Valley's daily newspaper, as sponsor of this event and exhibition. Additional supporters include B&C True Value Home & Garden Center and Carville Sierra Inc.
The festivities kick off with the Spring Fling Open House from 11 am to 2:00 pm on Friday April 25, with the artists presenting a Talent Show. Through this event, the community and people with developmental disabilities and their families have the opportunity to visit NCA and meet the artists and staff. Nevada Union High and other schools bring students from their Special Education Programs to join NCA artists in a day full of music, fun and entertainment.
This 3-day event will also help to raise much-needed funds for NCA's art and community programs. The annual Plant Sale features plants and supplies donated by local nurseries, businesses and other supporters, including A to Z Supply, Bella Fiore Gardens, Francis Nursery, Grocery Outlet, Hills Flat Lumber, Indian Hill Ranch & Gardens, Katlin's Trees, Kmart, Love Stone Tree Farm, Nevada County Farm, Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply, Prospector's Nursery, Raley's, SPD Market, Sweet Medicines Botanicals, Sweetland Garden Supply, Weiss Bros. Nursery and Wolf Mountain Wild Woman Nursery. Plants available for purchase will include seedlings, annuals, perennials, herbs, flowering shrubs and other shrubs and trees.

A Friday evening gallery reception from 5 pm to 8:00 pm will follow the day's festivities. The gallery exhibition will feature framed artwork inspired by houses and gardens, together with unique, one-of-a-kind functional and decorative items for the home. Fifteen NCA artists will be featured in the gallery, including some of NCA's newest artists (Michelle McVicker and Christina Swart) and artists who have built up a following of collectors like Barbie Wilkins and Helen Powell. During the three-day sale, the studio will also be filled with other artwork, ceramics, woodworking, weavings, and jewelry created by more than 60 NCA artists with developmental disabilities. Many of these items will be at discounted prices. Artists share in the proceeds from the sale of their artwork in the gallery and studio during the art sale, so the event is also an important source of income for people with disabilities.
A mixed media sculpture by James Hudspeth will be featured as a silent auction item for bidding through the run of the exhibition. The piece consists of a ceramic face in the shape of a guitar body with a found natural tree branch as the neck of the guitar.
"Sponsors like The Union and all our generous plant sale donors make the work we do possible," says NCA Director Glen Baird. "Events like the Spring Fling and our exhibitions open our doors wide to the community. People can see and appreciate the skills and talents of our artists, and perhaps begin to think differently about developmental disabilities. Visiting NCA for this 3-day event allows people to have fun and appreciate great art at affordable prices, and take home some plants for their spring planting."
